Astac offers the full range of UKATC courses at Rudloe College.
Aptitude Assessment
Duration: 1 Day
Objective: To assess a candidates suitability to commence initial ATCO
training.
Prerequisites: An interest in ATC & Aviation
Remarks: Can be presented at the requesting unit.
Air Traffic Control Assistant
Duration: 1 Week
Objective: To provide a foundation in all aspects of ATC. Airspace, Airfield
layout, Operations and Flight Planning are just some of the subjects which the
course covers.
Prerequisite: An interest in ATC & Aviation.
Remarks: The course can be tailored to individual unit requirements and can
be presented at the requesting unit.
Basic Training Course
Duration: 5 Weeks
Objective: To satisfy the European Common Core requirement for a Basic
Training Course subsequent to attending a chosen Rating course. The course
includes; Aviation Law, Human Factors, Aircraft performance, Meteorology,
Navigation, Equipment, Professional environment and Management.
Prerequisite: None (The course itself is the prerequisite to the Rating
courses.)
Remarks: The BTC can be either separate or part of a Rating course.
Aerodrome Control Visual

Aerodrome Control Instrument
Duration: 9 Weeks
Objective: To provide training in Aerodrome Control Visual & Instrument. The
course is presented in two distinct phases; the first being VFR only,
followed by an IFR phase in which the trainee is expected to integrate IFR &
VFR traffic. Training is also given in a split Air / Ground scenario and
there is also training in TRUCE.
Prerequisite: A Basic Training Course. This is currently part of the
existing course.
Remarks: The first phase of this course would suit those wishing to obtain an ADV Rating only.
Pre - Approach Control
Duration: 1 Week
Objective: To provide training in basic Approach Control prior to commencing
the Approach Control Procedural course.
Prerequisite: None
Remarks: This very popular optional course is highly recommended.
Approach Control Procedural
Duration: 7 Weeks
Objective: To provide training in procedural control techniques. The course
teaches how to provide services to arriving, departing and transit aircraft
without the use of surveillance equipment and includes elements of TRUCE and VFR traffic.
Prerequisite: A Basic Training Course or previous experience as an ATCO.
Approach Control Surveillance
Duration: 10 weeks
Objective: To provide training in basic and general radar skills, using
primary & secondary radars. The course teaches how to operate inside and
outside Controlled Airspace. Elements of TRUCE and Procedural Control are
included in this course.
Prerequisite: A Basic Training Course or previous experience as an ATCO.
Remarks: 1 week theory is followed by 9 weeks in the simulator.
OJTI
Duration: 1 week
Objective: To provide training in how to supervise student or trainee ATCOs.
Prerequisite: CAP 744 requirements
Remarks: Also available as a refresher course of shorter duration. (POA)
Examiner
Duration: 3 days
Objective: To provide training in how to conduct examinations associated
with the ATC licence.
Prerequisite: CAP 744 requirements.
Remarks:
Assessor

Duration: 3 days
Objective: To provide training in how to conduct assessments on a Unit
Training Plan.
Prerequisites: CAP 744 requirements
Remarks:

Verifier
Duration: 1 day
Objective: To provide training in how to verify the assessment process on a
Unit Training Plan.
Prerequisite: CAP 744 requirements
Remarks:
Assessment Prior Competence
Duration: Varies
Objective: To conduct assessment for prior competence in order that a credit
towards Initial Training can be obtained or OJT can be commenced.
Prerequisite: CAP 744 requirements.
Remarks: Courses can be tailored to individuals.
